As soon as the temperatures heat up, motorists start sharing the roadways with motorcyclists. And that means it’s a good time to talk about motorcycle safety tips.
Whether you ride a motorcycle or in another vehicle, motorcycle safety is everyone’s responsibility. In 2018, 4,985 motorcyclists were killed in crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Tips for those in four-wheeled vehicles
If you are in a car or truck you might have had the experience of not seeing a motorcycle and being spooked when you went to pull out of a driveway or change lanes. The fact is, in most motorcycle collisions, the motorcyclist isn’t usually the one at fault. Many times, it is the motorcyclist and not the car or truck driver who had the right of way. Motorcycles are smaller and not as easily seen and it is easy for them to be in a blind spot. They also don’t move the same way as cars or trucks.
Distracted driving can be a cause as well.
What you, as a motorist, can do is, don’t drive distracted and make sure you are constantly looking for motorcycles. And give them plenty of room!
Tips for motorcyclists
As a motorcyclist, you also need to be aware of what you can do for motorcycle safety. Mainly, you should wear a helmet at all times! Also, make sure you get proper training on how to ride your motorcycle and keep it in good working order. Know the rules of the road and drive defensively. Make sure you know your route, paying attention to puddles, debris and other issues. Remember, roads are most slick with just a little precipitation, due to the oils left behind by cars and trucks. ALWAYS give extra stopping distance.
Always assume other motorists can’t see you and don’t weave, drive on shoulders or medians or between lanes and never speed! Last but not least, although helmets are optional, they’ve been proven to save lives, so please protect yourself.
